“I Just Can’t Dig In.”
From ABC’s LOST: “House of the Rising Sun” (Season One, Episode Six, @ 34:25)
Jack is moving some of survivors into the freshwater caves. There’s an exchange between Jack and Kate, where Jack indirectly breeches the subject of Kate joining them.
Jack: “It’s almost time to go.”
Kate: “I dont’ wanna be Eve.”
Jack: “No one’s asking you to.”
Kate: “I just can’t dig in.”
Jack: “Why not, someone else can stay here, keep a look out wait for rescue. Why does it have to be you?”
Kate: “That’s not it.”
Jack: “Then what is? (Pause) Kate, how did you get to be this way? Just what is it that you did?”
Kate: “You had your chance to know.”
Jack: “If you need me you know where to find me.”
Kate: “You know where to find me too…”
I don’t know the words to express what is going on here, but I can somehow relate to Kate here. I believe I’ve seen this reluctance, fear, running away… whatever it is, in other episodes as well. Either way I empathize, even as I fail articulate. It is nameless, and it is real.
