The Agnostic Shift.
Alien Endeavors
There’s so much to write about the Alien. Countless stories. Actually, he has the wildest stories of anyone I know. Cross-dressing Vatican music directors. Bolts of green lighting springing from the ground in the distance during the 1994 earthquake in Northridge, CA. The old guys up in the rural ranching areas of southern California who entered a dual – six shooters and live ammunition. The kind that you don’t believe at first because they’re just too impossible, until the day the characters from the stories come to life in front of you. Like in that movie Big Fish. I am glad he is my friend for that reason if nothing else. But the way he took to all sorts of interesting and weird concepts and cultures, not just religion but science too, it was an amalgam of magic, mystery and power.
One day, the Alien tells me to see a movie called What the Bleep Do We Know Anyway?. At first I just blew it off, thinking it was some ridiculous thing about water having feelings or some such other non-sense. But one day, shortly after my extraterrestrial friend suggested I see the film, I overheard a conversation between two strangers talking about the movie. They had a lot to say about it and it was all good. I don’t know why I took their advice over his, but something about the way they discussed the film got my attention.
So I headed out to the movie theater and took in the picture. And it changed my outlook on everything. I had not been paying attention to things. And what the f*ck did I know anyway?
I’m not saying everything in that movie is law. And God knows plenty of skeptics have taken it to task. For me that wasn’t the point. The point was that it got me to open up and start asking big questions again. And I liked that. I got to explore the possibilities. It drove me a little insane too. But hey, there’s a price to pay for everything.
