Power of the People. Fear of the People.
An acquaintance from my political life recently quoted the following:
“Impotentes defendere libertatem non possunt: Those without power cannot defend freedom.”
My sentiment is this:
A lack of power is not what afflicts us. We have the power; always have. What we have is a surplus of ignorance. We ignore the fact that each of us, some day, will die. We have a surplus of fear. We are afraid of our common fate; one we share even with our adversaries. We have a surplus of gluttony. Our attachments to creature comforts chokes us as the leash chokes the dog at the hands of its master. What we have is an absence of self-awareness. Who and what we are, can do and have is what we say backed by our willingness to sacrifice our lives, treasure and sacred honor in order to defend our integrity, autonomy and sovereignty as individuals. What we have is an absence of courage. We embrace insecurity and self-doubt, promising ourselves to be obedient to the illusion of safety provided by a government that operates with our consent – not the other way around.
Be brave. Reject forever the illusion of absolute certainty. Embrace liberty and life. And die a good death.
